Lieutenant General Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, BB, SBP, BSP, ndc, psc, has taken over as the Commandant of National Defence College (NDC), Bangladesh 19 February 2015. He was born in Sandip Thana of Chittagong District. He was commissioned in the Corps of Infantry on 15 June 1980 with 2nd BMA Long Course.
In his diverse and colourful service he commanded Infantry Battalion, Rifles Battalion, Rifles Sector, Infantry Brigade, Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party, Special Security Forces, Logistics Area and Infantry Division. Besides, he performed duties in important appointments both at Division and Army Headquarters. He served as Battalion Commander in Bangladesh Military Academy, Director Operations in Border Guard Bangladesh and Director Military Intelligence Directorate, Army Headquarters. He was the Founding Member and Chief Instructor in Non Commissioned Officers’ Academy of Bangladesh Army. He was also the Founding Member and Pioneer Senior Instructor and Chief Instructor in Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training (BIPSOT). He served in Mozambique as United Nations Military Observer and Chief of Operations of Bangladesh Contingent in Sierra Leone. With the elevated and coveted rank of Major General in April 2010 he joined as Director General Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Party. Later he was appointed as Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals. He performed duties as Area Commander Logistic Area and Director General of Special Security Force and General Officer Commanding 9 Infantry Division. He was General Officer Commanding of Army Training & Doctrine Command before holding his present appointment as Commandant, NDC.
He is a graduate both from Defence Services Command and Staff College and National Defence College. He also obtained LLB degree, Master’s degree in Defense Studies, Master’s in Security Studies, Master’s in Political Science and Master’s in Business Administration. Presently, he is doing a thesis for PhD in Bangladesh University of Professionals.
Lieutenant General Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy received gallantry award ‘Bir Bikrom’ for displaying indomitable courage during a counter insurgency operation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts where he was injured with enemy bullet but captured their camp without fearing his life. His sacrifice and contribution during the process of peace treaty in the Chittagong hill tracts are worth mentioning. The-then Major General Hasan, General Officer Commanding, 9 Infantry Division led the rescue operation of Tazreen Garments, Savar in December 2012. The entire rescue operation of Rana Plaza, Savar was also led by Major General Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, Bir Bikrom. He received the coveted “Senabahini Padak” (SBP) for his exemplary leadership and contribution in Rana Plaza rescue operation. Bangladesh made the Guinness World Record of forming ‘Largest Human Flag on 16 December 2013 and “Most People Singing National Anthem Simultaneously” in 26 March 2014 where General Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, Bir Bikrom, SBP was the architect and chief coordinator of those events. The success of those mega events brought glory, honour and dignity for the people of Bangladesh.
He is married with Begum Farzana Nigar. They have two children – a daughter and a son. General Hasan loves to play golf and read books at his own time.
